Maryland Bicycle Laws
In Maryland, all cyclists under the age of 16 are required to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. This law is intended to protect young riders from head injuries in the event of a crash.
Cyclists are required to obey the same traffic laws as motor vehicles when riding on roads. This includes obeying traffic signals, stop signs, and yielding the right of way when appropriate.
Cyclists are generally required to ride as close to the right side of the roadway as practicable, except when passing another vehicle, preparing to make a left turn, or avoiding hazards. While not explicitly prohibited by state law, many municipalities in Maryland have local ordinances regulating or prohibiting sidewalk riding. Cyclists should be aware of and adhere to local regulations regarding sidewalk riding.
Cyclists are required to use hand signals to indicate their intentions to turn or stop. A left arm extended straight out indicates a left turn, a left arm extended downward indicates a stop or decrease in speed, and a left arm extended upward indicates a right turn.
Maryland law requires motorists to pass cyclists at a safe distance, leaving at least three feet of space between the vehicle and the cyclist when passing.
Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents
A bicycle accident refers to any incident involving a bicycle and typically involves some form of collision, loss of control, or other mishap resulting in injury or damage to the cyclist, their bicycle, or other parties involved. When bicycles are involved in accidents with motor vehicles, the consequences can be particularly severe due to the size and speed differences between bicycles and cars or trucks.
Common causes of bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles include:
- Failure to Yield: Motor vehicles fail to yield the right of way to cyclists, particularly at intersections or when merging into traffic.
- Distracted Driving: Drivers are distracted by their phones, passengers, or other activities, leading to them not noticing cyclists or their movements on the road.
- Unsafe Passing: Motorists passing too closely to cyclists, violating the safe passing distance laws and potentially causing a collision or forcing the cyclist off the road.
- Dooring: When a driver or passenger in a parked car opens their door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, causing a collision.
- Speeding: Motorists driving at excessive speeds may have reduced reaction times and be less able to avoid collisions with cyclists.
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI): Drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs are more likely to be involved in accidents with cyclists due to impaired judgment and coordination.
- Failure to Obey Traffic Laws: Motorists failing to obey traffic signals, stop signs, or other road regulations, leading to collisions with cyclists who have the right of way.
- Turning Accidents: Motorists turning left or right without properly checking for cyclists in their path, resulting in collisions.
- Poor Road Conditions: Uneven road surfaces, potholes, or debris on the road can cause cyclists to lose control or be thrown off their bikes when avoiding obstacles, potentially leading to collisions with motor vehicles.
- Visibility Issues: Poor visibility due to weather conditions, low light, or obstructed sightlines can make it harder for motorists to see cyclists and vice versa, increasing the risk of accidents.
What Are Your Options after a Hit-and-Run?
A hit-and-run accident involving a cyclist occurs when a motorist collides with a cyclist and then flees the scene without stopping to provide assistance or exchange information, as required by law.
The hit-and-run accident begins with a collision between a motor vehicle and a cyclist. This collision can occur at intersections, along roadsides, on bike lanes, or in any area where cyclists and vehicles share the road.
After the collision, the motorist involved in the accident decides to flee the scene instead of stopping to assist the cyclist or exchange information. This decision may be driven by panic, fear of legal repercussions, intoxication, or a disregard for the well-being of the cyclist.
Unfortunately, the cyclist is left at the scene of the accident, potentially injured and in need of medical attention. Without the responsible party present, the cyclist may be unable to obtain necessary information for insurance claims or legal proceedings.

“Showed me true dedication that goes far beyond a paycheck”
James Farmer and his team exceeded all expectations! I had a very serious criminal case and his firm was recommended to me by a family member. I was incarcerated during this time and he and his associate Stephanie came to update me on multiple occasions on the progress of my case. They were not only professional but the amount of time and energy they put into my case showed me true dedication that goes far beyond a paycheck! They prepared for trial, but in the end was able to work out a plea deal that did not include any jail time. I couldn’t have asked for a better attorney. I highly recommend Mr. Farmer and his team for any criminal case!- Previous Client -
“Kind, sympathetic, reassuring and more importantly, very knowledgeable”
I couldn’t be happier with the service I received from this law firm. I felt comfortable from the minute I first walked through the door. I had less than two weeks before the expiration of my personal injury filing date and was overwhelmed. My first appointment was with Elizabeth who took my huge stack of papers with a smile and said, “Let me take care of this for you.” Although all of the staff that I encountered were wonderful, my main experience was with Mr. Farmer and Elizabeth who were both kind, sympathetic, reassuring and more importantly, very knowledgeable. My case was handled professionally and in a timely fashion. My case was recently concluded and I am very happy with the outcome and would not hesitate to use them again or recommend them to my friends and family in the future. Need a good law firm, no need to look further.- Donna -
